Submitting Requests to Teach Courses in Interdisciplinary Studies
Do you have a great idea for an interdisciplinary course?
The Interdisciplinary Studies Program invites suggestions from faculty in any department for interesting, creative courses. There is a two-step process for submitting your idea:
- Initial Inquiry—can be submitted at any time. Course offering would typically be at least one year from the initial inquiry.
- Full proposal—pending acceptance of the Initial Inquiry, a deadline will be established with request for full proposal.
Initial Inquiry
Submit the following to Director, Interdisciplinary Studies, Nancy Love, PhD (lovens@appstate.edu):
- Your name, title, department, chair and/or supervisor
- Brief course description (100 words)
- What fields of knowledge are relevant to this course (How/Why is it IDS)? (up to 200 words)
- How will you integrate interdisciplinary materials in teaching the course? (up to 200 words)
- How will students demonstrate that they have integrated the materials? (up to 200 words)
- What is your experience/background relevant to teaching this IDS course? (up to 200 words)
- If applicable, who/what will you bring in to cover ideas/fields of knowledge that are not your expertise? (up to 200 words)
For examples of IDS courses, see: Curriculum
Full Proposal
Full Proposals will go through a two-step process. The IDS Curriculum Committee will review all proposals. Those that the Committee approves will be submitted to the IDS Advisory Council for their review and approval. If your proposal is forwarded to the Council, you will be asked to submit appropriate materials to become an Associated Faculty member within IDS (for details, go to http://www.ids.appstate.edu/invitation-faculty-join-ids-program). Additionally, the Director of IDS, Nancy Love, PhD will contact your chair/supervisor to confirm his/her participation in negotiating details, should your proposal be accepted.
Cross Listing a Course with Interdisciplinary Studies
If you have an existing course that you would like to cross list with IDS, please submit the information required for the Initial Inquiry and your current syllabus to Nancy Love, PhD (lovens@appstate.edu).
